Review: A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action by LuAnn McLane

McLane writes romances set in or near Nashville with cute titles. In A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action, Macy has been in love with her best friend's brother, Luke, for years. Luke is a local football hero who goes on to be the high school coach after his own career ends in injury. Luke has always surrounded himself with "Barbie Doll" girls so Macy, who is more curvy, has felt out of his league. Will Luke ever notice her?

This book has likable characters but there were too many of them! The attention paid to the secondary cast and their love lives took away from the development of Luke and Macy's relationship. Luke's struggle with his professional decisions was never developed. It would have made the climax so much more rewarding if it had been.

The main flaw for me was the the lack of tension in both the plot and in the hero/heroine's relationship. For example, Macy's good fortunes in her professional life were just too much after a while. McLane would have been better served to stick to Macy's original hairdressing profession and given her opportunities in that field. I read romances for happy endings but I like there to be some conflict along the way. There weren't enough bumps in the road for me in this one!

I have several of her earlier books and I hope they are better since I was disappointed in this one.

Review: In the Highlander's Bed by Cathy Maxwell

I have finally read a book by Cathy Maxwell! Medieval or Highlander romances have left me cold in the past because I just don't care for the violence. Not sure why, but I was compelled to start this book the other day.

It has a great beginning with the hero kidnapping the heroine and the two learning to love each other in the close quarters they share. However, despite our lovers being likable, they never really live up to their potential. Each are strong-willed but become mush after they proclaim their love. Frankly, I would say they are actually boring after a while. The ending was quite cheesy and the epilogue came up short.

I am glad I gave Highlander romances another try. Somehow I think those who read this type regularly will be bored to tears by this one, though. I have some more Maxwell books in my stacks and will get to them some day. It was at least an average book, just not great.
