Review: Game for Seduction by Bella Andre

I read erotica in small doses because the characters and stories usually are lacking depth. Although Game for Seduction takes place in the world of pro football, a setting I thoroughly enjoy, it proved no exception.

I liked that the hero/heroine knew each other before they hooked up. It gave them a history and something to build on. However, all of the characters, in general, were too stereotypical and one note. Dominic and Melissa were likable and had some interesting background to work through. But Dominic was too "caveman" for my taste. As with nearly all erotica I have read, the physical relationship takes away from the romance and emotions. One day, I hope I can find the perfect blend of all of these elements.

I'm sure I will read more from this author if she continues to write about pro ball players. However, I will continue to pick these up at the library. Note: I gave up on her first one, Game for Anything, because the story and characters were weak.

Review: The Dogs Who Found Me by Ken Foster

I am a dog lover and I cringe when I think of animals being abused or neglected. So, I hesitantly opened this book up. I was pleasantly surprised with its scope. I marvel at the tenacity and selflessness of those involved in rescue. I am saddened there is such a need but am grateful to those who can do it.

Although I am a small dog person, I was touched by these large dogs, many of them pit bulls. I found a blog related to the book and discovered there is another book by this author in the same vein. Here is a link to some photos of several of the dogs Ken rescued or kept. I will read his next book at some point too.

Review: New Moon and Twilight series so far by Stephenie Meyer

I wanted to read this series because my 13 year old daughter, who normally isn't that thrilled with reading, has devoured it. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

I would like to first comment on the series in general so far. I like the idea of this story-- a high school girl, her small town, vampires and werewolves. It is rich with possibilities. Watching how these creatures reveal themselves (or not) is interesting. I'm usually not a paranormal fan but if done well I will like it--Salem's Lot by Stephen King, for example. The author's take on both vampires and werewolves is fresh.

However...you knew this was coming...I really have a hard time liking Bella. Since the story is from her point of view, this is a big problem. She is many things a teenager is and then some. Selfish, self-absorbed, whiny, co-dependent, etc. When she drops all of her friends for Edward or even Jacob, that hits a nerve with me as I have seen this happen so many times over the years. Interestingly, those relationships never seemed to work out and so they would come crawling back until the next guy came along. Is it admirable to drop everyone but the guy you are involved with? Doesn't seem like a healthy relationship to me. Perhaps the biggest irritation for me is the way Meyer makes Bella the damsel in distress. Is this her ideal of the perfect female? Fragile and in need of a strong male to rescue the lady who is continuously getting herself into trouble? There isn't even any humor in this like the Janet Evanovich series. Doing it a few times can be interesting to the plot but not all the time. That type of writing isn't very inspiring or fresh. Lastly, she can get on my nerves when she doesn't understand how her actions continually impact others negatively, like her dad or the Cullens. Why isn't she learning from this? She is supposed to be smart, right?

I am so glad this series of books is getting teen girls--and their moms-- to read. I just hope they aren't getting the wrong messages about what a healthy relationship is. I understand the entertainment value of the books and try not to take it too seriously. I guess it's the hype I don't get when I consider all my quibbles. I also feel there could have been better editing to cut out some fat. Oh well. I liked the movie, Twilight, a lot. In fact, I liked it better than the book.

New Moon was pretty good although it lost me a bit at the end. I prefer the cozy setting of Forks and look forward to getting back there in Eclipse. I hope the characters will continue to evolve and become both more clear and likable, especially Bella.

Review: A Wallflower Christmas by Lisa Kleypas

Although I haven't read all of the books from this series, it was fun to see the reunions of the Wallflowers and I look forward to filling in the gaps. I have really enjoyed Lisa Kleypas but was disappointed in this holiday book. The storyline itself was quite slim and lacking in places. It reminds me of when I read a Janet Evanovich holiday-themed book several years ago. The authors appear to have just "phoned it in." When you consider this was a thin, hardback book, it's frustrating. Luckily, I was given this as a gift--thanks again, Kristen!!

Hannah and Rafe are likable enough characters but they deserved more. Things were wrapped up a bit too neatly for everyone, too, even for a romance! It wasn't a terrible book by any means but I expect more from this wonderful author.
